Where to Meet the Driver
Financial District
Front Street and University Avenue are no-stopping through the rush hours. The driver parks on a side street and comes in through the lobby, so a buzzer code or a desk name saves the wait.
Kensington Market
Augusta Avenue has no kerbside worth the name, and Spadina Avenue runs its streetcar down a median with islands. Drivers stop on College Street and walk the last block in.
Liberty Village
The rail corridor leaves few ways in, and the condo entrances face inward off King Street West rather than onto it. Name the building and the driver finds it first pass.
Cabbagetown
Rowhouses on the streets off Parliament have front steps and no driveway between them. A rear laneway is often the closest legal stop, so put the house number in the note.
Greektown on the Danforth
Danforth Avenue bans stopping through rush hour, which pushes the handover onto a residential street a block off it. A cross street in the note settles which way the driver comes.
The Beaches
Side streets run long and narrow from Queen Street East down to the boardwalk. Pick the wrong end of one and a driver loses five minutes doubling back on foot.
Cannabis Rules in Toronto (Just So You Know)
Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 709 (Smoking) and Chapter 608 (Parks)
Toronto writes its own setbacks on top of Ontario’s provincial rules:
- 9 m from any entrance or exit of a public building, and Toronto counts condo and apartment buildings open to the public as public buildings — lit cannabis and tobacco, not vaping
- 20 m from sports fields, playgrounds, splash pads, skate parks, outdoor pools, picnic shelters, outdoor theatres and park washrooms — smoking and vaping alike
- 0 m inside a named civic square such as David Pecaut Square, where the ban is outright rather than measured
- 9 m from bar and restaurant patios and from hospital entrances, under the provincial act
Chapter 709 is the rule that governs a condo lobby. Nine metres from any entrance or exit of a public building. Toronto’s definition of a public building takes in condominium and apartment buildings that are open to the public, along with places of employment. The slice of those nine metres falling on the public road is carved out of it. The rule covers lit tobacco and lit cannabis and stops there — vaping isn’t in it.
Parks are the stricter half. Chapter 608 puts 20 metres between you and a long list of park amenities. Sports fields, playground equipment and safety surfaces, wading pool basins and splash pad zones, skate and BMX parks. Outdoor pools and decks, covered picnic shelters and gazebos, outdoor theatre spaces and public washrooms. That one covers vaping too. Zoo and farm areas, swimming beaches, service lines and off-leash areas are off limits with no distance to measure at all.
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 sits above the municipal layer, enforced locally by Toronto Public Health. It sets 20 metres from school grounds, playgrounds and public sporting areas, and nine metres from patios and hospital entrances. Ontario sets the age at 19 and caps public possession at 30 grams, and consuming in a vehicle that’s moving or ready to move is out. Your own building writes rules on top of all of it — balcony bans are standard in Toronto condo and rental agreements.
