What the percentage actually measures

The 85% figure is the share of the oil’s weight that is Delta-9 THC. The rest is other cannabinoids and leftover plant compounds, trimmed down but never quite to zero.

Delta-9 is the standard THC in cannabis, the one behind the high. Naming it on the jar tells you exactly which compound the number refers to.

Batch math with an 85% jar

Weight in, milligrams out. One gram of this oil holds 850mg of THC, so the sums stay easy on any scale.

• 1 gram of oil: 850mg of THC.
• 5 grams: 4,250mg.
• The full jar: about 8,500mg.

Run those numbers backward for a recipe. A batch of 100 gummies at 10mg apiece needs 1,000mg of THC, which comes to roughly 1.2 grams of oil. Tinctures run the same way.

What an 85% jar will not give you

Refining strips the terpenes out along with the plant matter. No strain smell survives it, and no strain character either.

That blank slate is why cart makers add terpenes back afterward. Fruit, gas, dessert notes — all of it goes in after the oil, never before.

One honest limit: it’s a shade less neutral than the 95% jar. In a clear tincture or a lightly flavoured cart, a careful palate might catch it. In a gummy or a brownie, nobody ever has.

Working with an 85% distillate jar

Stand the jar in warm water until the oil moves, then weigh what you need. Skip the decarb step entirely, since the THC is already active.

• Edibles: blend into butter, oil, or an emulsifier so the dose spreads evenly.
• Cartridges: fill warm, or cut with terpenes for flavour and flow.
• Tinctures: stir into MCT oil and dose by dropper.
• Topicals: fold into a balm or salve base.
• Every batch: write the milligram figure on the label.

Who this jar is wrong for

Anyone shopping for tonight. Distillate is an ingredient, and it asks for a scale, a plan and a locked cupboard. Smokers do better with a gram of extract.

Distillate or extract for infusing?

Rosin and live resin can go into food, and both make expensive, strongly flavoured edibles. Distillate exists to avoid that. It brings the milligrams and none of the taste.

Keep the resin for a rig and the distillate for the kitchen. That split is why our shelf carries both.

Few kitchens work straight out of the main jar. Most decant once into smaller sealed pots and leave the rest shut between runs.

• Warm the full jar once, not repeatedly.
• Pour into 1 or 2 gram working pots.
