Shatter is a solid, see-through cannabis extract, gold to amber, that cracks like glass when you break it. That’s where the name came from and that’s the whole of the definition. Everything else people attach to it — strongest, purest, cleanest, most dangerous — is either wrong or belongs to something else on the shelf.
This is what shatter is, how it gets made, how to actually use a gram of it, and the four things it keeps getting confused with.
What shatter is
Take cannabis, wash the resin off it with a hydrocarbon solvent, purge the solvent away, and let what’s left set undisturbed. It cools into a flat translucent sheet. That sheet is shatter.
Cold, it snaps. Warm, it pulls like taffy. Either way it stays where you put it, which is most of the appeal for anyone who has fought with a sticky extract on a cold dab tool.
The shorthand you’ll see is BHO, short for butane hash oil. That names the solvent used to strip the resin off the plant, not anything left in the finished gram.
What it looks and feels like
- Look: translucent, gold through to dark amber, flat.
- Feel: brittle when cool, taffy-like once it warms in your hand.
- Method: hydrocarbon extraction, then purged.
- Format: sold by the gram, broken off in pieces.
How shatter gets made
The solvent runs through packed plant material and dissolves the resin off it. That liquid gets collected, then put under heat and vacuum until the solvent boils away.
What happens next decides the texture. Left alone to set, the extract stays clear and hardens into a sheet. Stirred or whipped as it cools, it goes cloudy and soft — that’s badder, wax and crumble, same extract, different handling.
So shatter isn’t a different product from wax. It’s the same extract that nobody agitated.
Do not attempt this at home
Hydrocarbon extraction uses a heavier-than-air, highly flammable gas in volume. Home attempts are a well-documented cause of serious fires and injuries. Commercial extraction happens in sealed, ventilated closed-loop equipment for exactly this reason, and the purge step needs vacuum gear no kitchen has.
Colour tells you less than people think
Pale gold gets read as clean and dark amber as dirty. That’s mostly folklore. Colour comes from the starting material, the temperature of the run and how long the extract sat under heat during purging.
A darker sheet from well-cured flower can beat a pale one made from a poor wash. What actually matters is whether the solvent was purged properly, and colour doesn’t report on that.
The signals worth reading are smell and texture. A clean gram smells of the plant. A badly purged one smells faintly chemical and tastes worse than it looks.
What shatter isn’t
Four corrections, and each one points at a different product.
It isn’t the strongest thing on the shelf
That’s diamonds. Diamonds are crystals of THCA — the raw acid form of THC — that grow inside an extract, and they commonly run 90 to 99% THCA. Heat converts THCA into active THC, which is why a single rice-grain crystal lands so hard.
Shatter sits below that. Strong, tidy, and not the ceiling.
It isn’t the most flavourful
That’s rosin. Hash rosin is pressed from ice-water hash using heat and pressure alone, with no solvent anywhere in the process, and it keeps far more of what the plant smelled like.
Shatter’s flavour is decent and never the reason to buy it. People buy shatter for how it behaves.
Solventless Hash Rosin 1g
Ice-water hash pressed into golden rosin with heat and pressure alone, no solvents anywhere in the process. A full gram of Willo’s most flavour-forward extract, built for low-temp dabs.
It isn’t live resin
Live resin is made from plants frozen at harvest rather than dried and cured first. Freezing early preserves the volatile compounds that dry and cure drive off.
Both use solvents. The difference is what state the plant was in when the solvent hit it, and that shows up almost entirely in the smell.
It isn’t a synonym for dabs
A dab is the act — a small amount of any concentrate flash-vaporised on a hot surface. Shatter is one of many things you can dab. Rosin, badder, diamonds and live resin all dab too.
The four formats, side by side
| Characteristics | Shatter | Diamonds | Hash rosin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made with | Hydrocarbon solvent | Solvent, then crystallised | Heat and pressure only |
| Texture | Brittle glassy sheet | Loose hard crystals | Soft golden badder |
| Strength | High | Highest on our shelf | High |
| Flavour | Moderate | Close to none alone | Strongest of the three |
| Handling | Easiest, stays put | Easy, dosed by the grain | Fussiest, moves when warm |
| Our price per gram | $40 | $65 | $69 |
How to use a gram of shatter
Break off a piece about the size of a grain of rice. That’s a dose, and it looks far too small the first time.
On a rig. Heat the nail, let it cool a little, drop the piece in and cap it. Draw slowly. Low heat tastes better and wastes less.
In a vaporizer. Load a concentrate chamber and go. The tidiest option indoors.
In a joint. Run a thin strip along the inside of the paper before rolling. Warm it slightly first so it bends rather than snaps.
On a bowl. Lay a shard on top of packed flower. Less controlled, and it works.
Use a dab tool rather than fingers. Body heat softens shatter fast and half of it ends up on your thumb.
Temperature is the whole skill
Running a nail glowing hot destroys the flavour and gives you a harsh, scorched hit. Most of what people dislike about dabbing comes from heat, not from the extract.
Let a heated nail cool for 30 to 45 seconds before you drop the piece in. You’ll taste the difference immediately and a gram goes noticeably further. Electronic rigs handle this for you by holding a set temperature.
Storing it so it stays shatter
Cool, dark and airtight. Heat and light are what turn a clean sheet cloudy and soft over time.
That change has a name — sugaring, where the extract slowly crystallises out and goes grainy. Nothing is wrong with sugared shatter and it still dabs fine. It stops looking like the thing you bought.
Parchment paper, not plastic wrap. Silicone containers work for the short term, and long storage in silicone pulls terpenes into the container walls.
Where to start
If flower is where you are now, shatter is the standard first step past it. It’s the cheapest gram on our concentrates shelf, the easiest to handle, and it fails gracefully — a dose that’s slightly too big is uncomfortable rather than alarming.
Start on the small side, and start at home. Health Canada’s guidance is direct: higher THC means more adverse effects and heavier impairment.
THC Shatter Concentrate 1g
A full gram of glassy amber shatter from Willo, with the snap-and-pull texture the format is named for. Stable, tidy to portion, and easy to travel with — the classic first step…
Our extracts range covers the rest, and the hash shelf holds the solventless side.

FAQ
What is shatter made of?
Cannabis resin and nothing else. A hydrocarbon solvent strips the resin off the plant, then gets purged away under heat and vacuum. The finished sheet is concentrated plant resin, which is why it’s called an extract rather than an additive.
Is shatter stronger than weed?
Considerably. Flower carries its resin spread through plant material, and shatter is that resin with the plant removed. One rice-grain piece is a full dose, and treating it like a bowl of flower is the standard beginner error.
Shatter vs rosin — which is better?
Different jobs. Rosin uses no solvent and tastes far better. Shatter handles better, costs less per gram, and stays where you put it. Buy rosin for flavour, shatter for a predictable, tidy gram.
Shatter vs diamonds?
Diamonds are near-pure THCA crystals, commonly 90 to 99%, and hit harder than anything else we stock. They taste of almost nothing alone. Shatter is weaker, cheaper and carries real flavour.
Why did my shatter turn to sugar?
Heat, light and time. The extract slowly crystallises and goes grainy, a change dabbers call sugaring. It dabs exactly the same. Store it cool, dark and airtight in parchment to slow it down.
How much shatter should I use?
Start with a piece the size of a grain of rice and wait a few minutes. Onset from a dab arrives almost immediately, so there’s no long guessing window. Add more only after you’ve read the first one.
Is shatter the same as dabs?
No. Dabbing is the method — vaporising a small amount of concentrate on a hot surface. Shatter is one concentrate you might dab, along with rosin, badder, diamonds and live resin.
Can you smoke shatter without a rig?
Yes. Run a thin strip inside a joint before rolling, or lay a shard over a packed bowl. Neither is as efficient as a rig at controlled heat, and both work fine.
