Lit cannabis pre-rolls trailing smoke over retro rainbow arcs

Infused vs non-infused pre-rolls: what’s the difference

Infused pre-rolls are joints built with flower plus cannabis concentrate, and that one extra layer is the whole difference between the two boxes sitting side by side on our shelf. Same seven grams. Same hemp cones. Roughly double the price on the infused pack, and a very different night.

This guide covers what infused means in practice, what it does to strength and burn, and which of the two is the better buy for how you actually smoke.

What infused actually means

A plain pre-roll holds ground flower and nothing else. An infused pre-roll holds ground flower plus a concentrate, worked through the flower, coated onto the cone, or both.

Willo builds ours in three layers. BC-grown flower goes in first. Live resin is infused through that flower. Then the hemp cone gets a coat of kief on the outside.

Each layer stacks strength on top of the last. Willo rates the finished joint at about 40% cannabinoids, by its own labelling. Plain flower carries no such layer.

Live resin and kief in plain words

Live resin is a concentrate made from plants frozen at harvest rather than dried and cured first. Freezing early keeps far more of the smell and taste intact, which is why live resin reads fruity rather than syrupy.

Kief is the loose resin dust that falls off dried flower. Dusted around the outside of a cone it slows the burn and adds strength at the same time.

The three ways a joint gets infused

Not every infused pre-roll is built the same, and the method decides what you’re paying for.

Infused through the flower. Concentrate is mixed into the ground flower before rolling. Strength is spread evenly down the joint, so the last third smokes like the first.

Coated on the outside. Kief or concentrate goes around the cone. This slows the burn and adds a strong front end, tapering as the coat burns away.

A core down the middle. A thin rope of concentrate runs through the centre. Cheap to make, and it burns unevenly — the middle races ahead of the paper.

Ours use the first two together, which is the build that stays consistent from light to roach.

The two packs, side by side

Our like-for-like pair is genuinely like-for-like — same format, same night-side strain type, same seven grams in the box.

What the extra layer does to the smoke

Four things change, and only one of them is strength.

Strength. The obvious one. A joint at around 40% cannabinoids sits at the heavy end of anything we sell rolled.

Burn. Kief on the outside slows the tip. A gram that would run 20 minutes plain stretches noticeably longer, and it needs relighting more often.

Taste. Live resin lays sweet fruit over the flower. Distillate-infused joints lose the plant smell entirely, which is the trade Willo avoided here.

Pacing. This matters most. You don’t smoke an infused gram the way you smoke a plain one, and treating it like a normal joint is the mistake almost everyone makes first.

The non-infused pack

Oreoz is a dessert hybrid bred by 3rd Coast Genetics in Michigan, out of Cookies and Cream crossed with Secret Weapon. Chocolate and cream on the front, a gassy note underneath.

Seven grams of BC-grown flower, rolled and ready. No grinder, no papers, no half-rolled mess on the table.

The plain seven-pack

Pre-Rolls - 1g Indica Oreoz (Night) - 7 Pack

Seven Oreoz pre rolls at one gram each, rolled from BC-grown flower in organic hemp cones. Oreoz is the chocolate-and-cream indica hybrid out of Michigan, and this pack runs the night shift.

The infused pack

Grape Ape on the same night side of the shelf, built up with live resin and finished with kief. Grape reads like fruit rather than candy syrup, and the smoke stays smooth well past halfway.

The infused seven-pack

Infused Pre-Rolls - 1g Indica (Night) - 7 Pack

Seven grape ape infused pre rolls at one gram each, built to about 40% cannabinoids with live resin and a kief-dusted cone. Seven grams of BC indica flower for the Night side…

Which one is worth it

Neither pack is better. They answer different questions.

Buy the plain pack if

  • You smoke most days and want a joint that doesn’t end the evening.
  • You’re sharing, and want everyone to get through one.
  • Taste and the flower itself are the point.
  • You want the most rolled grams for the money — our budget weed shelf starts here.

Buy the infused pack if

  • Your tolerance has outgrown plain flower.
  • You smoke rarely and want the session to count.
  • You’d otherwise be dabbing, and want that strength without the rig.
  • You’re splitting one joint across a group rather than one each.

What a gram of each actually costs you in a night

Both boxes hold seven grams, so the comparison is clean: $40 against $80.75 for the same weight of rolled flower.

The number that decides value is how far one joint gets you. If a plain gram is a two-person evening, seven of them is seven evenings. If an infused gram splits three ways and still lands, the maths moves closer than the price tags suggest.

Tolerance is the variable nobody else can set for you. Someone smoking daily will finish a plain gram and want another. Someone smoking monthly will not get through half an infused one.

How to smoke an infused gram

Start with a third of the joint. Put it out, wait ten minutes, then decide. Onset from smoking arrives within minutes, so ten minutes is a real read rather than a guess.

Relight expectations matter here. The kief coat makes the burn uneven by design, so a cone that keeps going out isn’t a faulty cone. Take it slower and it behaves.

Health Canada’s position is blunt on this point — the higher the THC content, the more likely you are to hit adverse effects and heavier impairment. A 40% joint is not a 20% joint with extra flavour.

Storage

Keep both packs closed and out of the sun. Infused cones suffer more from heat, since warmth softens the resin and pulls it into the paper. Somewhere cool and dark keeps them rolling properly.

Humidity cuts the other way. Bone-dry flower burns hot and harsh, and a cone left open for a week gets there fast. The sealed pack handles this on its own, so open it and close it rather than decanting the lot into a jar.

Where they sit in the rest of the shelf

Our full pre-rolls range runs both builds across day and night strains. If the infused pack is your answer, the same live resin sells by the gram on our concentrates shelf for anyone with a rig.

If it’s the plain pack, the flower shelf covers the same strains loose, and our other buying guides cover how the grades work.

FAQ

What are infused pre-rolls?

Joints containing ground flower plus a cannabis concentrate. The concentrate is worked through the flower, coated on the cone, or both. Ours use live resin through the flower and kief around a hemp cone, which Willo rates at about 40% cannabinoids per joint.

Are infused pre-rolls worth it?

They’re worth it if plain flower has stopped doing much for you, or if you smoke rarely and want one joint to land properly. For daily smoking, the plain pack gives you the same seven grams at half the pack price and won’t write off your evening.

How strong are infused pre-rolls?

Willo rates these at around 40% cannabinoids per joint. Flower on its own sits far below that. Treat one infused gram as several plain joints and start with a third.

Do infused pre-rolls burn faster?

Slower. The kief coat holds the burning tip back, so a gram runs longer than the same gram rolled plain. The trade is that it goes out more often and wants relighting.

Why are infused pre-rolls more expensive?

The concentrate. Live resin and kief are separate products with their own production cost, and each joint carries both on top of a full gram of flower. Our two seven-gram packs run $40 plain and $80.75 infused.

What’s the difference between live resin and distillate infusion?

Live resin comes from plants frozen at harvest, so it keeps the strain’s smell and taste. Distillate is stripped down to THC with the plant character removed. Distillate hits as hard and tastes of very little.

How long does an infused pre-roll last?

Longer than a plain gram on both counts. The joint itself burns slower, and the effects from a stronger smoke run further into the evening. Most people split one rather than finish it.
